  1. I am about to take a beginners course in tai chi at my college. to my knowledge its tai chi for health I was looking for self defense which is why I read your blog. I found the instructor which was a student of dr. lam. I went to his website and he offers courses to become a teacher. im wondering should I even waste my time with the class.

    • I recommend getting out and seeing as many Tai Chi teachers as you possibly can. The more Tai Chi people you work with the better you will be and the easy it will be for you to recognize quality teachers.

  2. In the beginning you must learn “something” that resembles true Tai Chi. Be careful that you do not start bad habits. Dr. Lam is a physician. His alignment is good but I do not know if he teaches for self defense. You must start somewhere and as a beginner to be taught from someone who actually spent time with him would be wonderful for a beginner. That is my opinion. 6 years total study from master Paul Olivas, Scott Kimak under monk Shi De Shan, Rika Holwegger (certified to teach in Japan) Felix Berkhoudt under Jan Diersloot and Master Sam Tam, Dr. Yang Jwing Ming’s Retreat Center. Videos by Sigund Clear or Bruce Frantzis very good as a Westerner who does not understand the different languages in China.
25 years in ITF and WTF TKD and study of Okinawan Kempo…almost every MA is derived from chinese martial arts. You are ahead of the game if you are in chinese arts but finding good teachers is what is challenging. Sigund Clear is worth the money.
